The Mystery of Octopus

The Mystery of Octopus celebrates the majestic mosaic octopus that watches over the entrance hall of the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, created during the museum’s construction between 1899 and 1910. A true embodiment of maritime legends, the octopus alone encapsulates ancient myths, from the kraken to the tales of Homer: an image immortalized by writers such as Jules Michelet, Victor Hugo, and Jules Verne. Furthermore, the decorative artists drew heavily on Ernst Haeckel’s drawings, and the mosaic octopus appears to be a faithful reinterpretation of one of his famous illustrations. The collection Mystère d’Octopus dives into the elegance and mystery of the deep, with vibrant patterns and captivating details, paying homage to this iconic symbol of the ocean.
